Can hypnotherapy help with Hayfever?

What role does the mind play in the symptoms of hayfever?

Back

Every spring and summer, people brace themselves for those familiar symptoms—sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, and fatigue. While antihistamines and nasal sprays remain the standard treatment, more people are getting curious about whether mind–body approaches like hypnotherapy can help.

So, can hypnotherapy really reduce hay fever symptoms?

Understanding Hayfever - it's more than just pollen

Hayfever is an immune system response to pollen that leads the body to releases histamine and other chemicals.  These can cause inflammation in the nose, eyes, and airways.

This is a physical response, however the mind and nervous system do influence how strongly those symptoms are experienced.

Stress and emotional states can amplify allergic responses.  For example

  • Stress also activates the nervous system which can worsen inflammation
  • Emotions can increase symptom perception (e.g., itchiness, irritation).  What you give your focus too becomes your reality.

Where hypnotherapy can have a positive impact is by working on both these pathways.  When more relaxed, the nervous system is less triggered and learning ways to change focus can reduce the impact of the symptoms.

Science based research

One of the most frequently cited studies is a randomised controlled trial conducted in Switzerland.

The study was based on 79 participants with moderate-to-severe hay fever and compared a standard treatment to a standard treatment + self-hypnosis over two pollen seasons.

The results were:

  • Participants trained in self-hypnosis reported significant reductions in symptoms and improved wellbeing
  • Symptom scores decreased by around 25–30% on visual analogue scales
  • Objective testing showed improved nasal airflow under allergen exposure

This study suggests hypnotherapy may influence perception and physiological response, even if day-to-day awareness varies.

How does hypnotherapy help hay fever sufferers?

Whilst the understanding of neurology continues to grow, we still don’t fully understand how hypnotherapy can help.  However there are several scientifically plausible explanations we can lean on:

1. Nervous System Regulation

By inducing greater relaxation, the body shifts away from a stress driven state which in turn reduces inflammation.

2. Perception and Sensory Filtering

Hypnosis can reduce how intensely sensations are experienced.  Hypno anaesthesia is well-documented in pain management and similar techniques can be used to help desensitise symptoms.

3. Possible Immune Modulation (Emerging Theory)

As our awareness of the power of the mind increases, there is some suggestion that hypnosis may influence immune regulation.  What I have seen in my own work with clients is that clients have achieved phenomenal results that relieve and even overcome medical conditions.  The recognised ‘placebo’ effect is evidence of how the power of the mind can affect perception of pain and other symptoms.

4. Evidence from related conditions

While hay fever research is limited, hypnotherapy has stronger evidence in related areas:

  • Asthma: Evidence suggests hypnosis can reduce symptom severity and improve emotional triggers
  • Psychosomatic conditions: Meta-analyses indicate hypnosis can be effective for conditions influenced by mind–body interaction

This further strengthens the potential for hypnotherapy to help where  physical symptoms are influenced by the impact of stress on the nervous system and our own perception.

What hypnotherapy cannot do

Let’s be really clear:

– hypnotherapy is not a cure

– it should not replace medical treatment

And whilst evidence is still limited, for many people suffering from the symptoms, it is an avenue open to explore as a compliment to medicine as a way of improving the quality of life.

and here is a thought...

Through hypnotherapy, results are achieved that science has yet to explain.  In my work I have seen people overcome fertility problems, asthma and acute illness.

Claims around cures for allergies using hypnosis are yet to have scientific grounding, but the power of the mind is incredible and hypnotherapy can be used to help the body respond differently to them.

In conditions like hay fever, where the immune system, nervous system and perception all interact, that shift can make a meaningful difference to the quality of life over the summer.

If this has triggered your curiosity, let’s chat.

We can talk more about the techniques I use and what other clients have experienced so that you can make an informed decision as to what is best for you.
